Unit 2--Properties of Matter
Introduction:

As we enter our exploration into the field of chemistry, we start to look at the basic properties of matter. By examining the characteristics of different materials and how they interact with other materials, we can begin to understand how early chemists were able to categorize and identify different substances and elements. This unit lays the foundation for our further study of chemistry.
For your test you should be able to:
1) Define the following vocabulary words:
Substance Chemical Property Chemical Change Compound
Element Gas Heterogeneous Homogeneous
Conservation of Mass Law of Definite Proportions Law of Multiple Proportions Liquid
Mixture Percent by Mass Periodic Table Physical Change
Physical Property Solid Solution States of Matter
Substance Vapor Plasma
2) Compare and contrast physical versus chemical properties.
3) Distinguish among the different states of matter and be able to describe their characteristics.
4) Identify physical and chemical changes.
5) Differentiate between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.
6) Distinguish between elements and compounds.
7) Employ conservation of mass in problem solving.
8) Use the laws of definite and multiple proportions to determine the chemical structure of a compound.
