Unit 4--Electron Configurations

Introduction:

In the previous unit we learned about the underlying structure of atoms.
For your test you should be able to:
1) Identify each of the following scientists with their contribution to atomic theory.
Heisenberg Einstein Bohr Schroedinger
Pauli Aufbau Hund de Broglie
2) Define the following vocabulary words:
Electron Configuration Electron Energy Level Subenergy Level
Orbital Electron Transition Photon Photoelectric Effect
Pauli Exclusion Principle Hund's Law Aufbau's Principle Uncertainty Principle
Hertz (Hz) Amplitude Frequency Wavelength
Quantum Mechanics Planck's Constant Spectrum
3) Discuss the history of mankind's understanding of the structure of the atom.
4) Discuss the points of Dalton's theories that remain applicable today.
5) Know the relationship between protons, neutrons, and electrons in isotopes and ions.
6) Compute the atomic weight of an element from the percent abundance of its isotopes.
7) Determine the electron configuration of an element from its atomic number.
8) Calculate the energy, frequency, and wavelength emitted by a falling photon.
9) Compare and Contrast three types of radiation released by unstable nuclei.
10) Cite evidence that justifies the belief in the quantum mechanical nature of the universe.
