Unit 11--Electric Current and DC Circuits

Introduction:

Electric current follows two types of flow pattens: direct current (constant flow in one direction) and alternating current (frequent surges back and forth). This unit emphasizes the first of these two types of current flow. It examines the nature of the flow of electric current, how it is motivated to flow (voltage), and what opposes it's flow (resistance). In addition, we will look and learn about how resistors and capacitors (two basic electronic components) are used to direct, regulate, and store electric charge. We are about to launch into the study of electricity and electronics. In this unit you are going to learn how current flow is created and regulated. You will use resistors to direct and limit current flow and learn how capacitors can be used to store charge and protect circuits.
By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
1) Define the following vocabulary words:
Current Voltage Resistance Resistivity
Semiconductor Amp Volt Ohm
Watt Power Ohm's Law Joule's Law
Capacitor Capacitance Parallel Circuit Series Circuit
Compound Circuit Resistor
2) Construct an experiment that confirms Ohm's law.
3) Discuss how the voltage and current vary in series and parallel circuits.
4) Calculate the current, voltage, power, or resistance of the components in a circuit.
5) Discuss the difference between resistance and resistivity.
6) Describe how the resistive behavior of semiconductors vary from conductors a temperature increases.
7) Discuss the function of a capacitor.
8) Analyze the behavior of a RC circuit.
