Unit 13--Magnetism

Introduction:

The source of all magnetic fields is moving electric charge. In this unit we will explore the creation and effect of magnetic fields. Your background in circuits will help you understand the relationship between the current that flows through a wire and the magnetic field it produces. Understanding the interplay between electric and magnetic fields was crucial to the development of the technology that made our current technology possible. Without this knowledge you would probably still be procrastinating by candle light.
By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
1) Define the following vocabulary words:
Magnetic Field Tesla Inductor Henry
Electromotive Force (emf) Transformer Generator Motor
Lenz's Law Induced Current Right Hand Rule Magnetic Flux
Dipole Alternating Current Direct Current Faraday's Law
2) Predict the path of a charged particle moving through a magnetic field.
3) Compute the force on a charged particle moving through a magnetic field.
4) Compute the force on a current carrying wire in a magnetic field
5) Determine the induced emf in a coil of wire.
6) Explain how Lenz's law relates to the induced current in a wire.
7) Explain how transformers work and perform calculations that involve primary and secondary voltage/current.
